I'm quite new to the game and I am not sure of all the terminology. I used to play with a friend, and the deck I used had a lot of large, expensive creatures. I think it's called a slow start deck? Meaning you would both go along without many cards out in play and then all of a sudden someone would cast a huge creature that would totally wipe you out.

I now have a new playing buddy and she totally whupped my ass tonight because she had cast a dozen small creatures that all played off of each other and was able to turn 17 damage against me in one shot before I had anything out in play.

So I'm guessing what I need is more of a quick start, where I can pay the mana cost to get more things out in play to use. Another factor here is that the last time I played was several years ago; my deck is from the Darksteel block. I would like to update it with newer cards but I am missing a huge chunk of knowledge from the intervening years!

I'm hoping someone can suggest for me some good cheap, quick-to-cast creatures for my deck. Would I be better off starting fresh with a new intro pack from one of the new blocks? I don't have a fortune to spend starting up. I am (obviously) not looking to play very competitively but I was very frustrated tonight not being able to "afford" any of my great cards, and being trounced before I got anything out in play!

I also hope this is an okay request to make; do I need to post the list of the deck I'm currently playing?

ok first the types of decks:
control-dont let opponent hurt you
burn- usualy fast deals dirrect dammage
weenie- what u called fast start
horde-weenie but with green
slow-no slang term for this

and note that most deck fit into one of the hundreds of sub catagories

how to beat weenie:
use what are called wrath spells, they target the entire field of play i.e. wrath of god, firespout, pyroclasm. this should slow them down, next mana
x-cel use creatues that help you a) get more lands. or b) tap for mana this lets you play faster.
also dont try to tallor make a deck to beat another but rather use a side board to allow you to target a specific deck. because every deck has a weakness and the more specialized a deck is the greater that weakness is.

thank you those definitions help a LOT. I have been browsing through decklists online and I just keep getting confused!

I will post my list soon and see if I can get some further suggestions.

I don't have much time so I'll sum up for you.

Aggro- as much damage as fast as possible

Control- control the game as much as possible

Combo- card A plus card B ex..equals win the game

Everything fits into those and now days there are hybrids like Aggro-control,
Combo-control, ex..

MtgLord has good suggestions, use them. Dont build hate, just something all around bad ass:D.

Got to go,
