Hello and welcome one and all to the latest edition of Cards n'Flux. My name is Corlando, here wishing everyone Happy Holidays to all. I am sorry for the lack of articles in recent weeks, but with exams finally done and life beginning to work itself back into a normal routine I should be able to start writing once again. However, that is an entirely different matter, so in mood of the season why don't we look at a few presents under the tree.
This first present is wrapped in bright red and the sounds of yelling, maiming, and the occasional crash of junk can be heard coming from it. This present can only be Season Beatings, the 2009 Magic the Gathering Christmas gift card. This :manar::manar::manar::manar: sorcery has a pretty interesting effect called Family Gathering which forces each creature target player controls to randomly deal damage to another creature that player controls. This card really forces one to ask, "What kind of family gatherings do Wizards employee's have?" It's definitely a cute little card and a fun one to jokingly use on your friends 100 saporling tokens who all seem to gang up on the 68/68 Mycoloth your opponent just summoned last turn. Fun with the family indeed.
That was a nice present, I always prefer the small ones that make a big impact. Oh how about this one, Snow Mercy the 2010 Holiday card. This :mana2::manaw::manaw: snow enchantment puts a counter on all the creatures that deal damage to you which you can then force to tap by simply shaking the card. A little risky to power up, but all the awesome when you can just continually tap your opponent's creatures by shaking a snow globe. Quiet a wonderful little toy don't you think? A lot better than that confounded pyramid puzzle I got last year. Maybe I'll ask that spikey-haired kid a school how to solve it?
Turning to the next gift we see a package wrapped in blue. Inside is a note that reads, "You owe me," must be Gifts Given the 2007 Holiday Gift card. This :mana3::manau: instant allows a player to look through an opponent's library and find four different cards. The opponent then picks two of those cards and hands them over to the caster and puts the other two in the graveyard. Essentially this is the spell I wish I could play on my parents around this time of year. "Hey mom and dad, I have two options for you. Either support my newest crack-like addiction by buying me a box set of M11 boosters, or shotgun your wallet and get me a brand new car. Your choice." I wonder what this card would be like if it were standard worthy? Imagine stealing one of your opponent's Valakuts or Primeval Titan or possibly steal their Emrakul so that you can summon it next turn. Talk about impacting the mirror matches. Oh well, we can only dream.
I wonder what this next present is. It's round, weighty, and do you smell something burning? Oh that's just the fuse on the bomb that is Evil Presents, the :mana2::manab::manab: sorcery Wizards printed for their 2008 Holiday gift card. Now this card definitely lives up to its name as being evil, allowing you to put a creature card on the field under your opponent's control, only to watch it attack them each turn. Oh the possibilities for this card are so many I can hardly count them. Why not give your opponent a Duskdale Wurm and watch a 7/7 smash them every turn it can? How about Abyssal Specter and watch them lose cards and life each turn? Or how about the powerhouse 10/10 Leveler and have them milled before they can even take damage? I'm glad this card is not actually usable in any sort of format, but I also just want to see just how someone could abuse this little card. Well I guess we will just have to settle for casual. Now I know I forgot something but.. BOOOM!!!!!!. Right, Looney Tunes character I am not.
Anyway, before I head on over to the emergency room, some place I hope not to see any of you during this wonderful time of the year, it seems we still have one more present. It's round, smells old, wait is that the wrapping paper I used last yea- Oh no... it can't be, NOOO!!!! FRUITCAKE!!!!! Yes ladies and gentlemen, Wizard's 2006 Holiday card was the :mana1::manag::manag: Fruitcake Elemental. This indestructible, 7/7 monstrosity is not an example of the power to mana curve going out the door, but it is one of the best examples of flavoring I have seen in Magic. First off Fruitcake Elemental is a 7/7 meaning it will have an impact on the board, just like real fruitcake on anyone's holiday. Second its indestructible meaning it will not go away easily no matter how hard you try an how many friends you lose. However, its final two abilities are really where its flavor comes in. "At the end of the turn, Fruitcake Elemental deals 7 damage to you," and, ":mana3: Target player gains control of Fruitcake Elemental." This is just perfect. You have a card that perfectly sets up the eagerness for which players will desperately try to get rid of the creature, just like its real life counterpart. This is an example of flavor done for kicks and done right. All I can say is, good job Wizards.
All these wonderful cards, all the possibilities, almost makes you want to make a deck around them. So I did:
A Bant Christmas Carol
Creatures:
4x Bant Sureblade
3x Jhessian Infiltrator
4x Noble Hierarch
3x Fruitcake Elemental
4x Wall of Denial

Well I guess that brings this week's edition of Cards n'Flux to a close. I hope you all have a Happy Holidays and here's hoping that the New Year brings us grand adventures, smiles with laughs, and plenty of new Magic. My name is Corlando and always remember, "Etherium is Limited. Innovation is not." Happy Holidays.
