is the artifact tapped? need help!

I was playing a game of magic with a buddy of mine.

and he had a artifact equipped to a creature of his. he then attacked with the equipped creature and then used a card called toil to renown

the question is would the equipped artifact on attacking creature be considered a tapped artifact or would it be untapped because the artifact has no reason to tap.

Enchantments and Equipment do not have a reason to tap on their own. When a creature without vigilance attacks it taps, but notyhing atteched to it taps unless stated otherwise.
